Linda’s Story

My husband Dave took his own life unexpectedly, leaving behind all his belongings. He was missing for three days before the police found him deceased. Those days of not knowing were the most traumatic time for me and our son. When we were told he had been found, our hearts were shattered, and our lives changed forever.

I discovered Billy’s Lifeline about three months after Dave’s passing. Founder Natalie Kirk was gathering experiences related to GPs and suicide loss, so I reached out and was invited to the charity’s launch day.

The practical challenges after losing someone were overwhelming, especially dealing with Dave’s personal belongings in his hobby room. Billy’s Lifeline was with me every step of the way, helping clear the room and offering emotional support. Their assistance made this painful task so much easier.

One moment that stands out was when I was at rock bottom, overwhelmed by unanswered questions. I messaged my support worker, who called me immediately and calmed me down. That support was a lifeline when I needed it most.

Billy’s Lifeline reassured me that my feelings were valid and provided the emotional care I needed. Their personal experiences and understanding continue to help me through the healing process.

The support groups have also been incredibly helpful, offering connection with others who have experienced suicide loss. Activities like crafts and Reiki have been a calming way to heal and take care of my mental health.

Sharing my story has been healing in itself. Suicide is a taboo subject, but it doesn’t have to be. My advice is to reach out for support—you are not alone. Billy’s Lifeline has been vital for me, and I don’t think I could’ve gotten through this past year without them.

Grief from a loss like this isn’t something you just “get over.” But knowing there’s ongoing support when needed has been a godsend, helping ease the pain.

Although Dave is gone, Billy’s Lifeline has given me hope for the future. I’m determined to help others on this difficult journey, just as they helped me.
